SEEWALD: An American Musical about a Forgotten Fundie Father🤩
2020.09.29 07:26 _craigularjoeSEEWALD: An American Musical about a Forgotten Fundie Father🤩
Ok someone rewrote the Schuyler Sisters song a few weeks ago and now I cannot stop parodying Hamilton songs about the Duggars. My deepest apologies to Mr. Lin Manuel Miranda for defrauding your beautiful work. Opening number, Benjamin Seewald: How does a kool aid drinking, son of a cult family Bible thumping man, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot In Arkansas by Tontitown impoverished in squalor, grow up to be a stoner and a baller? The one-dollar fundie daughter with a creepy father Got a lot farther by grifting a lot harder Not from being smarter Or being a self-starter By seventeen, they placed him in charge of something larger And while all the girls were being married off and carted away Across the plains, he struggled and kept his guard up Inside, he was longing for something to be a part of The brother was ready to beg, steal, borrow, or barter Then a baby boy came, and he gave him a weird name Our man saw his future drip, dripping down the drain Put a pencil to his temple, connected it to his brain And he wrote his first refrain, an ode to sweet Mary Jane Well, the word got around, they said, this kid is insane, man Popped out a buncha babies and never really had a real plan Enjoy the nice sedation, don't forget from whence you came And the world is gonna know your name What's your name, man? Benjamin Seewald My name is Benjamin Seewald And there's a million joints I haven't smoked But just you wait, just you wait It wasn’t long before he and Jessa split, full of it, debt-ridden Two years later, Ben kept his stash well-hidden Half-dead sittin' on the birth couch, the scent thick And Ben got better but that couch still made him sick Moved in with the Vuolos, but they found the weed Ben tried to hide Left him with nothin' but ruined pride, something new inside A voice saying, "Ben, you gotta fend for yourself" He started retreatin' and smokin’ every weed strain on the shelf There would have been nothin' left to do for someone less astute He woulda been dead or destitute without TLC’s contribution Started workin', clerkin' for his late night marijuana fix Tryin’ out cocaine and rum and all the things he shouldn’t mix Scammin' for every nug he can get his hands on Plannin' for the future see him now as he stands on The bow of a plane headed for the new land In Cali you can be a new man In Cali you can be a new man (just you wait) In Cali you can be a new man (just you wait) In Cali you can be a new man In Cali, Cali Just you wait Benjamin Seewald Benjamin Seewald We are waiting in the wings for you Waiting in the wings for you You could never back down You never learned to take your time Oh, Benjamin Seewald Benjamin Seewald When the stoners all sing for you Will they know what you overcame? Will they know you rewrote your game? The world will never be the same, oh The plane is on the runway now See if you can spot him (just you wait) Another fundie man comin' up from the bottom (just you wait) His enemies destroyed his rep, Jessa plain forgot him Joe, Austin, John David: We, fought with him Asa: Me, I died for him Jinger: Me, I trusted him Jessa: Me, I loved him Jerm: And me, I'm the damn fool that caught him (caught him, caught him) There's a million things I haven't done But just you wait What's your name, man? Benjamin Seewald The Story of Tonight (The scenery/connotations will be about the wives being joyfully available) Feat Ben, John David, Thicc Daddy Joe and Austin: Raise a glass to Jesus Something she can never take away No matter what they tell you Raise some tots to the four of us Tomorrow there’ll be more of us Telling the story of tonight Dear Theodosia (Jerm as Aaron Burr, singing to prop): Stock photo baby what to say to you? You have 2 eyes, and your mother’s middle name When you came into my world you cried, and it hurt my ears Now I’m instagramming every day with you Although a kid doesn’t really match my style When you smile, the likes and comments top the charts Man I know I am so smart You will come of age in fundie nation But I don’t have a clue, ‘bout what to do with you If we lay a strong enough foundation I’ll get my mega church, perhaps a spin-off too And I’ll blow us all away, someday, someday Yeah I’ll blow us all away, someday, someday
Hi there! I hope your week is going well and thanks for taking the time to look at my post. I've been completely alone isolating for most of 6 months during quarantine, and am eager to find someone I can click with on a deep level. to get a few things out of the way: I am very liberal. BLM Supporter of planned parenthood. Fuck Trump. If you brag about how on fire for Jesus you are, we will not get along well. My name is Austin! in college i was given the nickname Panda by friends. I find it very endearing and many people still call me that today. I have an undergrad in history and education and a masters of divinity, though I wouldn't say I'm very religious at the moment. I used to be a full time streamer and I have also competed professionally in hearthstone. i hit the top percentile or better in hearthstone, hs battlegrounds, pubg, fortnite, and league of legends. D&d is a big part of my current life. I run many games, including starfinder, pathfinder 2e, d&d 5e. i love game systems and have a bunch of other ones I've wanted to try. I've also designed and created my own world with a history, lore, and a map. I'm a huge proponent of empathy, kindness, and authenticity. I try to be real, open, and trustworthy. i don't play games, and i tend to blunt and straightforward. I like complimenting people and making them feel good. I follow a bunch of e-sports. team liquid is my favorite team. I keep up with dota 2, league of legends, csgo, and somewhat follow hearthstone. In college i used to play ultimate frisbee competitively. I was really good. I made a couple of all-region teams and we went from 4-24 my sophomore year to playing in the game to go to nationals my senior year. I also like watching basketball, baseball and keep up with the ultimate scene. In the last 2 months I've been making pretty substantial changes to my diet and exercise, and now make sure I get out for at least 2 miles on a walk 5-6 times a week, have cut soda and fried foods out of my regular diet. its been a big change but I'm proud of it. music is a big part of my life, i used to sing in high school and college and love concerts. i mostly listen to metal/prog, but also have a soft spot for choral music and like anything that isn't country. I'm open to a lot of different situations given the right person, ranging from dating seriously to stuff more casual. lets talk about it! I'd love to hear about your passions and what is most important to you. I ask that if you reach out, to please share a photo. tell me about your favorite band, or your favorite game, or whatever else your heart loves most. I value honesty over politeness, so even if you just have feedback about how I can make this more interesting/attractive to others, i would love to hear your constructive opinions. Here is me! https://imgur.com/NxDi6Lh Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope to hear back from you, and that you have a great day!

Donna Mae Lyons Kunkel May 23, 1928 - Sept. 6, 2020 She was born Donna Mae Lyons May 23, 1928. She died at the age of 92, Sept. 6, 2020. To some she was called Donna Mae, to others Donnie but to five extremely lucky people she was called mom. Donnie was born to John Harold Lyons and Edith Lillian McHugh Lyons in Portland, Ore. Raised in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, she attended Laurelhurst Grade School, Grant High School and attended the University of Oregon. Donnie married the love of her life, Paul Worth Kunkel Jr., July 10, 1949. Paul and Donnie were married 70 years. Paul preceded her in death July 2, 2019. Her love of singing was infectious. From Camp Fire Girls, church choirs, high school and college choirs to leading sing alongs and rounds in the family car, her voice was sweet, clear and strong. Always one for a good laugh, her subtle sense of humor and wit left everyone around her feeling happy and cared for. The word "patience" can barely describe her ability to listen to others, meet the needs of five very different children, manage a household that was teeming with activity and support her loving husband Paul. Her talents in the kitchen were wildly known by all who had the opportunity to eat her food. Homemade cookies, lemon meringue pie, baked beans, ham sauce and deviled eggs were favorites. Donnie had the ability to cook over an open flame as the family camped in the wilderness. Born athletic, Donnie had a mean backhand on the tennis court, a graceful turn on the ice rink, the ability to tap and ballroom dance her way around a room and the guts to learn how to ski and mountain climb in her 30's. Even in her 90's, she was a big hit on her beanbag baseball team while residing at Hearthstone at Murrayhill. Socializing and being an active part of a community was important to Donnie. She enjoyed the "No Bridge Bridge" club, the "Sew and Sews" and the Fiji (Phi Gamma Delta) wives. She loved to plan her high school reunions. She was a volunteer at OMSI, Tuality Hospital, Meals on Wheels and the North Plains Garlic Festival. She was an active Mazama member. Donnie was president of the Dental Auxiliary and the founding owner of Create a Calendar. Donnie was the backbone of the Kunkel family. She was the family photo historian and even before computers, did genealogy research that stretched generations. Her ability to relate to each one of her children and grandchildren, and know what each of them needed both physically and emotionally was astute. Her happiness and joy in her marriage to Paul was an inspiration to everyone. We were all so blessed to have her in our lives. You will be missed, Donna Mae Lyons Kunkel. Here's a shout out to the Queen of the Casserole, the wielder of the wooden spoon, the list maker extraordinaire, the rock star mother and grandmother and the team player wife that taught and raised us all. We all won the winning bingo card with you. Donnie is survived by her five children, Kathy Kunkel Carrier (Courtland Carrier), Wendy Kunkel (David Audet), Thomas Kunkel (Terese O'Neal Kunkel), David Kunkel (Diane Kunkel) Joseph Kunkel (Genene Aberin); grandchildren, Lauren Carrier, Thomas Carrier, Benjamin Audet, Spencer Audet, Megan Kunkel Hallstone, Heidi Kunkel, Charles Kunkel, Daniel Baker, Emily Kunkel Waldron, Evan Kunkel, Thaddeus Kunkel, Halle Kunkel, Austin Barber, Aarik Narum, Audrey Narum; eight great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends. Because of current COVID-19 restrictions, the Kunkel family will hold a memorial service at a later date. 2020.09.25 18:37 VforVendetta90My Group A Guesses After Performances
Giraffe - My top guess is Fred Durst He said he has something in common with a powerful giant- a reference to "Rollin" being The Undertaker's entrance theme in WWE for a few years. The carnival game he plays costs $3- a reference to Limp Bizkit's debut album Three Dollar Bill. Other guesses are Brian Austin Green & Danny O'Donoghue. Popcorn - My top guess is Angela Bassett she played Tina Turner hence the reference to Tina Turner, I highly doubt an 80 year old living in Switzerland with health conditions would do this mid pandemic. Other guesses are Mary J Blige & Taylor Dayne Snow Owls - My top guess is Derek and Julianne Hough. She had a Xmas Album, hes been very comedic on tik tok. The clues hinted at siblings over couple. They also sang this exact song together on tour. Other guesses are Kirk & Candace Cameron and Vince Gill & Amy Grant Sun - My top guess is Idina Menzel, reference to Disney & freezing weather links to her voicing the singing of Elsa in Frozen. She has the vocal range, she was on Glee former Fox hit show. Other guesses are Leann Rimes & Demi Lovato Dragon - It was obvious it was Busta from the crazy costumes, have 3 albums with Dragon in it and his iconic deep voice. Though it almost had me thinking JaRule or DMX for a second lol
2020.09.22 21:36 itshauntedcollectionNeed help getting out of a lease possibly
I have been living at this complex in Austin since November. I originally signed a 7 month lease, then renewed for another 13 months. So my new term started in June. Last month, my complex started doing construction on my building. They are re-doing the stucco. Every day for the last month I have been woken up by LOUD banging/hammering and drilling (not quite sure what they are using. But it goes from about 8 am to 6 pm. It's so loud and disruptive. Especially because I am working from home right now due to COVID. Aside from that, they have drilled about 10 large holes through my bedroom from the outside. The only thing my apartments have done to fix this is to have maintenance come tape it up with ugly black tape. They told me they will not be able to patch it up until construction is finished. Whenever the construction first started, they said it would only be a couple of weeks, however this has been going on for at least a month now. I have complained and all they have given me is a $150 credit off the last months rent. But the construction is still going on. The only other option they have given me is to go work from the clubhouse.. which I cannot do because my work requires me to have a desktop computer with 2 monitors. I am paying over $1300 a month to live here and honestly, at this point I just want to move. I don't think I can take another day of hearing these noises. Can someone give me advice on how to go about moving without ruining my credit or having to pay a ton of money to get out of my lease? Other things to mention: I feel like I have no privacy because the workers are right outside my window and I can hear them talking/singing which means they can hear me too, and probably see through my blinds. I am a woman who lives alone and it makes me feel uneasy. I also have no access to my patio or back door because they have it blocked off. Thanks!

I made this playlist based on a bunch of recommendations from some blogs and music sites I love, including Under The Radar Mag, Balloon Machine, Mad Mackerel, Trouble Juice, For The Rabbits, Spectrum Culture, Austin Town Hall, Raven Sings The Blues and WLUR 91.5fm. Will keep adding to it over the coming weeks :)
The four strangers stood around the car's trunk as the man inside beat against the door, his screams muffled by the duct tape they'd wrapped around his mouth. The first man broke the silence. "Who wants first crack at him?" he asked, crossing his hairy arms. He didn't know any of the other men's preferences, had only worked with the tattoo-covered man in the past, had only heard of the scarred man and freckled boy recently. "I grabbed the dude," Tats said, gesturing to the two others. "Hey," Freckles snapped, his voice cracking, "I kept lookout. If I didn't stop that homeless fuck from wandering into the alley, we'd both be in cuffs right now." "They wouldn't have called the cops," Tats dismissed. "You don't know that!" Freckles countered. "Taking that risk would be fucking stupid. That's why I was lookout in the first place." "I'll take care of it," Scars offered, stepping forward. He reached for the trunk's door. From head to toe, all exposed skin his associates could see were covered in scars, from cuts and scrapes to burns and a variety of other shapes they could only imagine the story behind. "Wait!" Hairy interrupted before Scars could open the trunk. "Masks." "Shit, I didn't bring one!" Freckles said, holding his head in his hands. "I gotta get out of here," Tats mumbled. Scars laughed. "If you thought we'd give him the chance to tell anyone anything, you didn't understand the job." With that, he opened the trunk. The man inside screamed again, struggling to his knees while holding his hands up. He had a tough time of it, with rope tying his hands, knees and ankles together. Scars pulled him out and dragged him to the ground, both hands around the man's throat. "You struggle any more than you already have and I'll wring your fucking neck. Nod if you understand me." With tears streaking down the sides of his head, the bound man nodded, his screams replaced by whimpers. Scars smiled. "Good." He pulled the bound man up and gestured to Tats. "Help me carry him." Fromm the driveway, Scars and Tats carried the bound man to the entrance to the cabin. Hairy retrieved a toolbox from the trunk before closing it and locking the doors to the car. "Hey," he said to Freckles, "keep lookout, alright?" Freckles shook his head. "No, I wanna be part of this." Hairy held the toolbox up. "No, you really don't." Inside, the bound man was brought to the metal chair in the middle of the room. A single bulb hung overhead. The chair was clean, but the floor beneath was stained a reddish brown, the old blood of previous visitors. Hairy set the toolbox on the ground near the chair. Scars untied the man's arms and secured them to the chair's armrests with straps. "I'm going to ungag you now," Scars said, finger and thumb gripping one end of the duct tape. "We have questions for you, and if you don't answer them, we'll have to hurt you. Understand?" The bound man nodded. Hairy expected Scars to quickly pull the tape off, but instead he slowly began to pull it from the skin of the bound man's face. At first, he thought Scars was being gentle, but as the bound man started fidgeting and balling his fists, he realized that Scars was dragging it out. Finally, the tape uncovered the man's mouth, and Scars pulled a balled-up sock out from behind it. The bound man breathed deeply. "Thank you," he told Scars, "I couldn't breathe under that." Scars smiled. "I promise you, by the end of this you won't be thanking me." Hairy stepped forward. "I think it's time we ask him some questions now." "Ask him, then," Scars said, not breaking eye contact with the bound man. "Okay," Hairy agreed. "So let's just jump into it, then. Carl, you were the last one seen leaving the boss' storage unit on 3rd and Sunlight before we found it empty the next day. Where's the fucking money?" "I didn't take it!" Carl cried out. "I swear I didn't take it! Whoever said I was there last is a fucking liar!" "Cameras don't lie," Hairy said, almost disappointed to hear Carl's answer. "Sorry, buddy, but if you won't talk, we'll have to make you sing." "What cameras?" Carl asked, suddenly looking very nervous. Hairy laughed. "That's the point of having them hidden: so you don't know they're there. Listen, we saw you walk in with empty duffle bags, walk out half an hour later with those bags looking awful heavy, and now the boss' money is gone. Even I know two and two is four." Carl grimaced. "You're gonna kill me, aren't you?" "No," Tats said, not knowing whether he was lying or not, "we just have to find the money. You're out, obviously, but you don't need to be taken out unless you lie to us." Scars slowly dragged the toolkit from the side of the chair to the stained floor before him, the equipment inside jingling slightly, metal clinking against metal. "Personally, Carl, I'd like to hear you lie to us again." "I won't!" Carl promised. "Seriously, I'll tell you where it is!" Hairy crossed his arms. "Okay, then. Tell us." Carl sighed. "I just wanted to pay for my daughter's college, man. I always fuck everything up. Okay, it's buried behind my parent's house in Gresham, in 6th Court. White house, left side of the duplex with flamingos on the lawn. I made it look like a dog's grave, even put up a little sign that says 'Spot' on it. Figured no one would dig it up unless they knew what was there." Tats looked at Hairy. "Think we should check it out before letting him go?" "Well," Hairy began to say, "we might as-" "no need," Scars said, opening the toolbox. "I'll make sure he's not lying." "I'm not!" Carl promised. "Please don't hurt me! I told you the truth!" "You sure about this?" Hairy asked. Scars retrieved a pair of pliers from the toolbox. "Take a look at me. I know what makes people talk." Hairy and Tats looked at each other and shrugged. "Beats doing the legwork," Tats said. "We'll be outside," Hairy agreed, opening the door. Carl began to whimper again. Scars waited for the door to close behind him. "Okay, then, Carl. You'll tell me where you really hid the money, and I promise I'll make it quick. Lie to me, and I'll make you look like me, then I'll do the same to your daughter." Carl looked Scars up and down, his eyes welling up. "I'll tell you. Just promise you won't hurt her." Scars smiled. "I'll only hurt her if you make me." --- The screams started a few minutes after Hairy and Tats left the cabin. It didn't take long for Carl's cries to stop, but in that short time, the terrible wails were burned into the minds of Scars' associates. Scars exited the cabin after a few minutes of silence. His hands were stained with blood, which he wiped off on the shirt Carl had been wearing earlier. "He was telling the truth," Scars declared. "6th Court, parent's backyard." Hairy looked back into the room, then wished he hadn't. Carl's hands were removed, as were his eyes and ears. His mouth was a gaping maw of blood and flesh. The missing parts were in a pile, the hands mutilated at the fingertips. "Jesus, what'd you do to him?" "Covered our bases," Scars said, tossing the shirt aside. "Fingertips and teeth for identification, everything else so he couldn't communicate with anyone ever again." "Teeth and prints I get, why would we need to do anything else?" Tats asked. Hairy looked again, and saw Carl's chest begin to rise and fall. "He's fucking alive? Oh my god." "I wasn't paid to kill anyone," Scars said simply, heading for the car. "If you want him dead, kill him. Leave him here and he'll die anyway." Without hesitation, Hairy closed the door to the cabin. --- After threatening their way into Carl's parents' backyard, two of the boss' goons dug up the grave, finding only a dead dog inside. Knowing what to expect, all four of the associates scattered, expecting more of the boss' goons to come for them. The first duffle bag was found a week later, in the basement of a house owned by Hairy. Most of the money was gone, but the bag was clearly the same kind seen on the boss' hidden cameras. Hairy was found upstairs, having overdosed on heroin a few days before. No one suspected foul play. Carl's daughter found the second duffle bag at the foot of her bed one morning, the window to her room still wide open. The note inside told her to spend the money wisely, as it's what her father would have wanted. The other three men weren't seen in Portland again. Freckles went south, knowing that there was always work for people like him in LA. Tats took a Greyhound to Austin, where he could lay low for a while and consider his options. Scars went north in an old beater he'd bought with cash, a pistol in his lap, a shotgun in the trunk and a bag filled with money stuffed underneath the passenger's seat. He had a promise to keep to the people who gave him his scars.

Hello! So I've been looking for some singing lessons as singing is something I love to do and want to get better at. I figure in Austin there should be lots of amazing voice teachers around. I'm open to online as well as in person lessons (obviously mask on, socially distant). This is more for me to get better at something I enjoy, I'm not aiming to be a professional. I am open to studios as well as music students at UT who are looking to make some extra cash. Thanks!
I Max Downey was a carpenter. He often would toil away at little knick-knacks in his garage. The green recliner he used— which smelled of cigarettes and stained with Jack Daniels— was the only heirloom his father passed down to him. Well, the only physical heirloom. Down the ghostly halls he could still hear him yelling, “f—-.” “F—,” Max said. But he couldn’t say it past his own censorship. There was also one of his two wives, Alice Austen. She thought her grandma was named Jane. That’s what she told everyone, after all, while growing up in rural Virginia. Max suspected she felt useless in a flyover state, so this story helped pass the time. Max Downey and Alice Austen had been married for just about a year. The two of them had a daughter, Rosie. Rosie had her mother’s eyes. Then there was also his other wife, Sophie. Sophie had long, dark hair and skin as pale as snow. She would often be quiet: a deliberate choice, Max assumed, as when she would talk she would often stumble over her words or become overly emotional for her own good. “Did you take out the trash?” said Sophie from the top of the stairs. “They’ll be here soon.” “No, I will in a second though... honey.” This day was Rosie’s third birthday. Her bright red hair was being done up by Max’s first wife, Alice, and her dress was rather gaudy and sparkly: perfect for Max’s perfect girl. Max could feel Sophie scoff. He could hear the silent taps of her feet scatter away across the hardwood above him. He knew her well enough to hear the silences. But still: Silent, he thought to himself. Why is she always so silent? The basement in which Max sat had a sole light bulb dangling away above. Sometimes when Max was bored or wanted to think, he would lightly bat the bulb around in circles with his father’s old walking stick. Away it would swing, making the shadows dance away. The entire room would come alive: the walls would breath with new life; the chairs would gain more dimensions than ever. And boy, when he would add a little something extra to his drink, he would dance too. This one evening, as the light sent blue streams cascading around the overstuffed basement, Max kept having a recurring thought. He did not know if it was a dream, or a nightmare, or simply, well, a thought. It was something of a mystery: he felt words whispered in his ear, a wet kiss on his lips, the scream of a child, the whimpers of a dying animal, and what could only be described as paper tearing. All of this made him hopeful, and that is what terrified him. Hopeful of what, he did not know. Now was not the first time this thought—and lack of thought—had trapped him. He had it when he was in high school, too, when he was crammed in an overstuffed locker. And he had it in college, when he hid in his room trying to write as fast as he could because the words could not keep up with his fingers. Truthfully, Max chose not to put any weight on this thought. The ruminations in his mind would more often than not be skewed towards negativity. That is one aspect of his consciousness which he understood better than most. Upstairs the doorbell rang. “They’re here,” called both Sophie and Alice in unison. Max rose from his seat, put his contraption under a tarp, turned off the single bulb, and slowly thumped up the stairs; each step sending cascades of dust on the concrete below. A delicious scent of well-cooked chicken wafted from the oven, and water in the kettle was heating up. The door opened in the living room. “Hello, Annabel!” Alice said her best customer service voice. “Aren’t you looking beautiful. Oh, and that can’t be Daniel! You were just a baby last time I saw ya. What happened?” The people in the front room laughed while Max was building up the courage to enter. Finally, he did. “Hello Mrs. Lawson,” he said, feigning a smile. “May I take your coat?” “Why thank you,” said the older woman, handing over her overly-expensive coat of which she would be sure to admit is real fox fur*.* “Careful now, love,” she said. “It’s real fox.” Within an hour the home began to fill up with bodies. Max admittedly did not know everyone, nor did he really care to. The table was set, yet nobody sat down. Instead, wine was being poured like water from a melting iceberg— all that to say, nothing could stop it now. “So you work in advertising,” Max said to the portly and suave man standing across from him, Alice by his side. “Yes.” “Oh,” said Max. “Do you enjoy that?” The man nodded, then shuffled in his shoes, and walked away. “So riveting,” said Alice. “He really is good at parties, huh?” Alice giggled. Max hadn’t seen Alice crack a smile all night. Her teeth soon disappeared, and her mouth formed a slight smirk. Then— “Hey, are you OK?” “Am I okay? What do you mean?” “Well,” she paused. “I don’t know. You’ve just seemed… off. Strained, maybe?” “I promise I am fine. I’m just tired.” “Well if you need to talk…” You won’t listen. “You’ll listen,” Max finished her sentence. “Yes,” she smiled again. “I’ll always listen, my star.” “I love you, my sunrise.” Cheesy, Max thought. But it didn’t stop a smile widening on his thin face. The stories told by the separate groups ranged from the normal— “Oh little Mary, I can’t believe how old she’s gotten!” — to the mundane— “Well, work has been interesting. We got a new client from Austin who flew over here and blah blah blah blah blah blah,” — to, well: “I heard this house has some baggage, eh?” one of the guests said to Max and Alice. “Do tell!” “It burned down a while back,” interrupted Mrs. Anderson, the next door neighbor who smelled of cigarettes and fur balls. The crowd gathered around her, as crowds tend to do around elderly individuals who may share their wise wisdom of the world. “Oh it didn’t burn down, Janice,” Alice said. “Only a room.” “I was there, I should know,” Anderson retorted in her crackly voice. “How old were you?” said Alice, trying her best to hide her annoyance with a grin. “Oh I was probably… well… ten? Maybe twenty, I don’t know.” “There’s a LARGE gap between those years,” said Max. Alice leaned in to her husband. “Not for her,” she whispered. “Now quiet down.” Max smiled. “Well, you see,” Mrs. Anderson continued. “The old house owner. David, I believe his name was. He was an arsonist! And he killed his wife because— well, he just didn’t care for it anymore, or he lost sight of what he truly wanted. I don’t know. But ‘ere’s the kicker. He got scared and LEAPT ON HER.” The crowd around her gasped and tried to hide their giggles. “Oh it must have been a sight,” Mrs. Anderson continued, “He was trying to save her, see. Trying his best to extinguish the fire with his large body. I guess he was afraid of the guilt, and they both burned up together.” The crowd seemed confused and weren’t quite ready to trust her. Then Alice chimed in: “Hmm, that, or… a candle ignited one room, it was caught before anyone was hurt, and the damage knocked twenty grand off the asking price?” People laughed. Mrs. Anderson seemed to acknowledge the absurdity of it all, and let out a slight smile too. “Yeah, yeah,” she said. “Keep telling yourself that!” There was a pause. “I smell chicken,” said one of the guests. “Oh God it must be David!” said Scott, a tall awkward man with a crooked nose. The crowd laughed. The timer on the oven went off, dinner was served, and the feast began. Everyone gathered around the table, with Rosie— the guest of honor— seated at the head. People began to eat to their heart’s content. Max sat next to Alice, who sat beside Rosie. He kept getting glances at her, trying to catch her eyes. They used to mouth “I love you” to each other during these rather hectic scenes. And this scene was hectic: people were being rowdy and drinking wine like it was water during the California drought; inappropriate jokes were being told as merrily as a relative talks about politics during thanksgiving; and the table became messy like a storm had just rolled through. Max snuck his glances and ate his food. And he drank, a lot. He didn’t know why he was drinking, he didn’t enjoy drinking that much. But he just was. It was his only daughter’s birthday, after all. Soon, the dinner wore on and the guests outstayed their welcome. “Dinner has been wonderful,” said one of the guests. “Yes. David really tasted great.” “Shut up Scott. The joke’s over,” said Scott’s husband. “Dinner really was wonderful though, and I think it is time to go.” “Nonsense!” said Max, struggling to stand up in his stupor. “Let’s pour some more drinks.” “No we really must go,” said the husband. “I’m not taking no for an answer!” Alice put her palm to her face, and rubbed her eyes incessantly. “No, sorry. The sitter is gonna wonder about us. Can’t leave her too long with that rascal anyway!” he smiled, gathered his coat and his husband, and made his way to the door. Eventually the guests were gone, and both Max and Alice were putting Rosie to sleep. They carried their young daughter to her bed. Thankfully she was a sound sleeper. Her red hair flopped on her pillow, and her eyes — her mother’s eyes — glistened up at them. Both Max and Alice stayed by her side as she slowly drifted to sleep. After a brief moment of questioning whether or not Rosie was faking them out, both Max and Alice retired to their room. They thought about the decorations and the wrapping paper and everything else that accompanies a party like this laying about the living room on the floor below, and they decided that it can wait until tomorrow. In the bedroom, Max was the first to get into bed. Alice always took her time in the bathroom. She called it “me time,” and Max understood. “Do you hear that?” Max crawled under the covers while Alice took off her earrings and removed her makeup. “Hear what?” “The door downstairs. It’s banging.” The door on the floor below was banging against the outside wall. The wind had kicked up. “I hear it,” said Alice. “David’s up late, huh.” “God, yeah. His haunted ass is angry.” “Damn straight!” “I’ll fix it in the morning. That’ll surely piss him off.” “Mmm hmm.” “Hey,” Max said. “Hey.” “I love you.” “You better!” Alice had moved to the bedside table and began to undress. “No, really,” Max repeated. “I love you.” “I know.” Alice crawled into the bed with Max. They snuggled up together. “I love you more than anything.” “Well I love you more than anything, anything.” “That doesn’t even make sense.” “I guess my love for you just doesn’t make sense.” “Goodnight, beautiful bitch.” Max kissed Alice’s forehead. “Goodnight, my lovely asshole.” Alice clicked the lamp off. Their young daughter was sound asleep in the next room, and soon, so were they. II Do do do de do do de do… do do do de do do de do… The alarm clock rang. 5 A.M. A big day. Max crawled out of bed, careful not to awaken Alice, and pulled on his nice pants; the same pants he wore to Scott and Darryl’s wedding when he spilled champagne on the left pant leg and had to wash up in the bathroom, then missed a ring when he was putting his belt on: a fact he only realized after he had gone back to his seat. Those pants. Max went downstairs to the kitchen. Everything was spotless, but he was ready for the mess only a rushed morning of school and work can bring. Cracking one egg, then two, Max stood, watching them sizzle, drinking the coffee he had ackingly brewed a couple hours earlier. Max watched the yokes turn orange. Then the albumen went brown. The albumen is more commonly known as “egg white,” as most would call it. Max wasn’t most. “Mornin’” said Sophie, after a big yawn. “Good morning,” “Big day, huh?” Sophie pulled up a chair and sat across from Max. “I can’t believe it. I honestly lost sleep just thinking about today.” “You’re a good dad.” “Thank you but I wasn’t fishing for compliments, I swear.” Max grabbed the carton of orange juice out of the refrigerator. “Are you sure about that?” “Well, umm. Yes?” The glasses were poured. “You wake up three hours before you’re supposed to to make breakfast for your loving wife and daughter, you put on your nicely stained pants, you brush your hair (when do you ever brush your hair?), nice cologne— the whole shebang. And you’re still not fishing for compliments?” “That’s the exposition, yes.” “Okay then. Well it’s a big day. She’s only going to experience first grade once, you know.” “We can only hope.” Sophie had been sitting in the stool across from Max, her eyes darting up and down his body. “What?” said Max. “You’re a dork.” Sophie smiled a sly smile. The smile a sadist gives a dying animal [woah, that got dark]. “Morning, daddy!” Rosie stood at the entrance to the kitchen. “Morning, buttercup.” Max wanted to surprise both Alice and Rosie in bed, but apparently that wasn’t going to happen. Of course I can’t do that right, Max thought. He can still salvage today though. “Honey,” Max yelled up the stairs. “I’m coming, I’m coming.” In a happy panic Alice ran down the stairs. “Happy birthday to you—” The two of them started to sing. Rosie had a bigger grin on her face than Max or Alice had ever seen before. Her freckles seemed extra vibrant that day. A grin— a HUGE grin— a grin which said “You’re a good dad. The best. No other dad compares to you. Wow, this is changing my life— great work! I’m not going to become a serial killer now. Every parent’s dream!” They sang until the words awkwardly fizzled out (because Max was singing traditionally and Alice added the classic “You look like a monkey/and you smell like one too!” (which never fails to make a first grader laugh), then Max prepared the meal. For Rosie: two eggs with “7!” written out in shards of bacon and an orange; and for Alice: kale and sweet potatoes, roasted, with a side of eggs and bacon as well (Max had mastered the art of the sunny-side up); and Max: a bowl of cereal, just stale enough for him to like it. The three of them ate. This day wasn’t just Rosie's birthday. After their prepared meal, Max helped Rosie stock her backpack, and the three of them began to leave. Rosie and Alice left first. Max stood at the entrance, leaning against the door jam. He could still see that dinner party four years ago. That moment seemed lodged in his head. Maybe it was because Sophie, who just entered the room, was wearing the same blue dress she wore that night. “Do you want to come with us?” Max said. He knew the answer. “I’m sorry. I can’t. You know I can’t.” Rosie stared at her feet, shuffled in her place, then looked back up at Max. The door in the kitchen knocked on its hinges as they spoke as an autumn breeze kicked up. “I understand,” said Max, and then he left. As crawled in the car, pulling his aching legs into the vehicle, he could see Rosie staring out of the upstairs window. How she had gone upstairs so quickly, he did not know. She was crying. The ride to school involved a lot of singing and merriment. Max simply could not believe that his little girl had grown up so quick. He told her the story of when she was born: how he could hold her in the palm of his hand; how he felt like he was born again that day. Alice smiled, but kept her mouth shut. The trip to school ended quickly: both Max and Alice walked Rosie to her class. She held both of their hands, and swung in between them. Soon she was in the room, Max and Alice spoke to her new homeroom teacher— Ms. Fae: a young woman who seemed much too young to be teaching children. And then, back in the car. Max agreed to drive Alice to work. He saw it as a beautiful gesture, feeling like they were a married couple again. Again? Max thought. We ARE a married couple. “I was thinking we could go out tonight. What do ya think?” “I’m sorry, I can’t. I have a birthday-thing that I’m supposed to go to.” “Oh,” “Yeah.” “Who’s birthday?” “Gerald, from accounting. Do you remember him? He was at that white-elephant Christmas party last year.” “Oh. Mr. McGee, you mean?” “Yeahhh, that one—” “He has a name, you know,” said Alice. “Like a real name. Not Mr. McGee.” “I know,” said Max. “It’s Gerald McAllister. In my defense you were the one who called him that in the first place.” “I just don’t feel comfortable calling him that anymore.” “Oh.” “Yeah. His girlfriend just left him, and, well… he’s going through a hard time.” “That makes sense. I’m sorry.” “Why are you sorry.” “I’m sorry that he’s going through that, I guess.” “Yeah.” “Yeah.” The neighborhoods zoomed by. People dressed in their sweatshirts and sweatpants and had scraggly hair disappeared; extinction due to distance traveled as they were replaced with people in strongly professional attire. People with the sole purpose of succeeding and finally becoming successful now filled the streets, holding coffee as strong as their gait. Alice fit right in. “Hey, can I go to the party?” “I don’t know. I don’t think you would enjoy it.” “I think I would.” “You don’t like parties. And honestly, I think we want to give Gerry time to vent tonight. I don’t think he has any friends.” “Oh, okay. That’s no problem.” III Inside the Downey household, glasses were clinking and plates were being organized. The back door was opened, despite the cold. Birds were chirping overhead, and playing in the birdfeeder; or they would be if it were not for the squirrels. Rosie was in her treehouse. Today was her 10th birthday, so she was especially joyous, every once in a while erupting to laughter for no reason in particular. Max noticed a vagueness to everything. The world outdoors seemed dreary. Rays of light cast through the fog and drizzle. Mrs. Anderson was out and about mowing her lawn— as she had been since the early morning. The sun shone through, making everything their natural hues. The grass was one green; the cement was one gray. Everything seemed extraordinarily ordinary. And Max chose that day of all days to pick the weeds. Max felt… off. Every hand place against the soil brought a pause. It was taking him longer than usual to pick the weeds. He remembered how recently he had done this. But now it was simply too much to handle. “Alice,” he said. “Alice can you come here?” Alice came out from the kitchen. Max knew from her facial expression that she was still going to say nothing. But Max asked anyway. “Do you love me?” Alice rolled her eyes and smiled. “This again? Max, I love you.” “Do you— ” he paused again, trying to get the words out. “Do you love me?” Alice looked at him. Her smile faded. She looked void of any sort of emotion. Max stared at her. He was afraid to break eye contact. “Can we not have this conversation now?” she said. Max took that as his answer. “Are you going to leave me?” he pressed. Alice remained silent. “So, no answer?” “Is it worth giving an answer when you’ll ask again in 10 fucking minutes?” The lawnmower next door blazed again, and short whistles from Mrs. Anderson emanated from behind the fence. Max broke eye contact. He had to. He dug his fingers back into the soil. He could see in his peripherals that Alice was still standing in the doorway, before, seconds later, turning back to do the dishes. The water turned on again. He pulled out another weed. Then another. Then another. Then he heard a crash. Immediately he turned to look at the house. Alice was staring out the window, a look of panic on her face. Then Max looked towards the playhouse. There, on the floor, Rosie was laying. Her face was red, and getting redder. The expression looked as though she had just sucked on a lemon. Max rose to his feet and ran to his daughter, dropping his shovel on the rocks. “Are you okay?” he said to Rosie. Rosie kept screaming. “It’s going to be okay,” he said, as he turned her over. Blood began gushing out of the back of her head. She hit it on a rock. “I’m taking Rosie to the hospital,” he yelled into the house. Alice ran out to meet them. “No, I’ll take her. You’re busy.” “Let me take my daughter.” Alice took Rosie out of Max’s hands, as delicate as possible. Max stayed on his knees, palms against the cement. He waited for them both to be out of sight before he laid his head against the cement. The when the car’s engine rumbled, the tears began to flow. Slowly, he heard the screeching brakes pierce, and then the car rolled away. Hours began to pass by. Max kept looking at his phone, waiting for a text. Anything. He wanted contact. He wanted a “Hey, I love you,” text from his wife while his daughter was in the emergency room. This text did not come, and as the night began to pass on, he turned to something else to ease his worries. Finally Alice arrived back home. Rosie had bandages on the back of her head, and was completely asleep in her mother’s arms. Across from the door, on the bottom steps of the stairs, Max was sitting. It was obvious to Alice he had been crying. “Jesus, Max,” she said. “What have you been doing?” “I’ve been worried.” “I know. Do you think I haven’t been?” “Can we talk?” Max hiccupped. “Tomorrow.” “Now, please.” “Are you drunk?” “Please let’s talk,” Max groaned. “Tomorrow. Go to bed and sober up.” Alice tried to walk past him, but Max rose his hand and blocked her path. “Please—” “‘Please’ what, Max? Please don’t leave you?” “No,” said Max. “Please let me see my daughter.” “She’s asleep. And I don’t think she would like to see you right now.” Max waited for a time to say what he wanted to say. Something that had been haunting him. “I know you’re cheating on me.” Alice’s mouth dropped, then she composed herself. Two words finally exited her mouth. “Fuck you.” Max nodded and Alice walked up the stairs. Seconds later the door closed. The silence of the hall encompassed Max. He sat on his steps, his mind felt jittered and unfocused. He wanted to cry but the tears would not come. The stairs took an eternity to climb. Wood creaked underfoot, as did his bones. With every heave he saw her face staring back at him. He saw Alice. Sophie stood at the top of the steps looking down on him. “Sophie,” Max whispered. “Sophie, I… umm… I...” “F—-ed up?” Sophie was emotionless, looking down on him. “Yeah.” Finally Max walked into his room. Alice was in the bathroom. “Rosie’s in bed,” she said. “Okay.” Max brushed his teeth next to his wife. Not a single word was exchanged between them. Not until— “Do you hear that?” he said, slowly pulling the covers over his cold body. “Yes.” “I didn’t say what.” “Let me guess,” she said, turning over to look at her husband. “Is it our creaky old back door that is keeping us up once again because— surprise— you still haven’t fixed it?” The incessant banging from the bottom floor seemed to get louder. At this point, James was entirely under the covers with his wife, the baby monitor finally silent. “Yes.” He began to turn towards the wall, trying his best to pull every part of his body so that not even the hair on his legs were anywhere close to his wife. “And what do you have to say about that?” “I don’t know,” he said. “it doesn’t matter.” “Say it.” “It doesn’t matter, Alice. Drop it.” “Just say it. Why won’t you say it?” Alice pressed on “It’s windy, okay? That’s all I was going to say. It’s windy, and that’s all.” “So a comment about the weather.” “Yup,” he said. “That’s all. Goodnight.” “Goodnight.” She clicked the lamp off, and the room filled with darkness save the little red light on their baby monitor. After this conversation, James knew tomorrow would be a big day. The blinds were closed. A zebra pattern blanketed the room. Max pulled the pillow from his eyes and checked the time. 9:30 AM, the clock said. “God… dammit.” The house was silent. Rosie would have been at school. Maybe? Max questioned that. He felt like his daughter had died. Should I wish her a good day? No. Am I going insane? The alarm clocked beeped. Max pulled the pillow from his eyes and checked the time. 6:42 PM, the clock said. Ooof. He crawled out of bed and brushed his teeth. He looked in the mirror. Everything began to swirl. And one by one, his teeth fell out of his face. He heard crying. Sophie was in the bathtub, water pouring down her face. Her wedding dress was in a frenzy. Smoke, smoke. The smoke alarm began to drill above. “It’s happening again!” Sophie yelled in a panic. The room burnt up, and Max went with it. The alarm clocked beeped. Max pulled the pillow from his eyes and checked the time. 6:43 PM, the clock said. Max remained in his bed. With a thud the snooze button had been destroyed. The cool air from the open window drifted up his boxer shorts, and he sat up in his bed and placed his warm hands against his bare thighs. What am I doing? Max stayed sitting in that same spot for what felt like an eternity. He saw a sheet of white in his peripherals, lying with its face up. He didn’t want to look at it. Not now, he whispered to himself. I’m not ready to look at that now. So he didn’t. Instead Max got up, went to the restroom, and stared at himself in the mirror. His teeth were there. His hair was messy. The room was not flooded or on fire. Everything was normal. And everything would be normal throughout the house if that “damned” letter wasn’t on Alice’s side of the bed. “What are you doing, Max?” Sophie had walked in. Max could taste toothpaste. “I made a big mistake, Soph.” “It’s her birthday today, you know.” “I know. Rosie. God. They grow up so fast, huh?” “They do. But in a way wouldn’t you say it’s Alice’s birthday, too?” “What do you mean?” “Happy birthday, Alice?” “Happy birthday, Alice.” Sophie was gone. She left the room, strolled downstairs, and exited the house. Max walked out, and stared at the paper on the bed. He could swear he heard people in the floor below. There was none of that. It was just Max, in his room, with a sheet of paper. Finally with a gulp and more effort than he would care to admit, Max read the letter. Max spent the rest of the night staring up at his ceiling fan. It shook in place. The motor in the inner core was whirring, and the stamped steel shell vibrated in place. “I’m sorry.” The only response he got was from the door downstairs, knocking back and forth on its hinges, and Max knew that was the only response he deserved.

Full Recap (Source: Cageside Seats) Shotzi Blackheart vs. Io Shirai No mention of Shotzi’s staple gun promo. Blackheart offers her hand in a sign of respect, but the champ slaps it away. Evenly matched in the early going, with Shotzi getting a few covers and then locking in a submission that leaves Io scrambling for a rope break. She gets it, and the ensuing brawl leads to the Genius of the Sky hitting a moonsault off the top to the outside. She brings Blackheart in for a nearfall and we go picture-in-picture. The champ is in control during the commercials, but Shotzi dodges a charge as soon as we come back. Dropkick into the corner, then a facebuster. Blackheart hits a knee before Io hulks up and they go blow-for-blow in the middle of the ring. Each evades kicks, but when Shotzi tries to stretch Shirai, it’s countered to a crossface. Blackheart struggles, then like Io gets a toe on the bottom rope. The ensuing scramble ends with a senton into the ropes from Shotzi. A bridging suplex gets a great nearfall. She bridges into a submission, but Shirai gets her opponent’s shoulders on the mat to force her to release the hold. She charges back with a facebuster. Tiger Feint Kick leads to a dropkick from the top. One, two, no! Shotzi back with a super-rana, but the champ kicks out. They battle to the top, but neither can hit anything from there. On the apron, Io German’s Blackheart right on the back of her neck. Shirai gets her in the ring, but can’t get three! Running knees in the corner, then a moonsault from the top ends it. Great match. Io Shirai def. Shotzi Blackheart via pinfall Show of respect from the champ in the aftermath as Joseph, Wade Barrett and Beth Phoenix sing Shotzi’s praises. A video package puts over the vicious streak Tommaso Ciampa’s brought back with him. He’s in action next. Tommaso Ciampa vs. Desmond Troy Troy makes the mistake of expecting a clean break on the opening lock-up and eats a knee for it. The newcomer manages to hit a drop kick, but it’s not long before the beatdown is back on. Slingshot into the bottom turnbuckle. Willow’s Bell. Tommaso Ciampa def. Desmond Troy via pinfall The Blackheart gets a chair, but before he can attack, Jake Atlas is here with a microphone. He asks if Ciampa remembers him. He could run out there and attack the former champ, but he’s not a coward. He wants a match next week, and a smile from Tommaso looks like acceptance. Faceless interviewer guy catches up with Drake Maverick on his way to the building. He’s confident he and Killian Dain will be able to get on the same page against Undisputed ERA tonight, even though he hasn’t heard from Dain all week, and doesn’t have his number, and... After a break, our new NXT champ gets to talk in a pre-tape package. Finn Balor puts over Adam Cole, but says he’s the best. The questions keep coming - how is it being champ four years apart? Last time, he was building the brand. Now, the brand needs him. His wearing the belt means he’s the most important champ in the business, even as they show pictures of Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, and WALTER. He says guys need to fight to face him. Balor tells them to line up. Austin Theory is out proclaiming himself a first ballot Hall of Famer. His loss to Bronson Reed was a fluke, which he’s going to prove right now by issuing an open challenge to the locker room. The call is answered by Velveteen Dream’s worst nightmare, Kushida! Austin Theory vs. Kushida The Japanese Superstar attacks before the bell, but Theory gets back into it. He misses a standing shooting star press, and that creates an opening for Kushida. Battling on the floor, he sends the younger star into the ringpost shoulder first and goes to work on the arm. It’s not long before he has the Hoverboard Lock in. Kushida def. Austin Theory via submission Kushida won’t let go of the hold after the bell! The referee finally forces him to let go as the announcers wonder what’s gotten into the legendary super-junior. After some ads, we visit with the Garganos. Candice is upset that Tegan Nox is ungrateful, and just doesn’t get their way. Johnny’s mad their TV was busted; he hasn’t gone upstairs in a week because there’s still spaghetti everywhere. He wants to send Tegan a bill for their expensive new TV. She looks forward to winning next week’s #1 contender battle royal, and Gargano mocks the guys in the North American title match. Breezango vs. Imperium Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel attack before the bell, but the champs hold their own. Aichner hits Fandango with a cheap shot as soon as the match starts, and the beatdown on the Deputy starts immediately. The heels employ quick tags, and make the use of five counts as the work Dango over. The champ gets a boot up on a whip and elbows the German off the apron, but then Aichner turns him inside out with a clothesline. Imperium keeps him isolated in their corner. Barthel gets two off a suplex. Dango looks like he might punch his way free, but Barthel comes out of nowhere to take out his knee. The heels hit a tandem drop kick as we go to commercial. Shortly after we return, Fandango lands some strikes on Barthel. He gets caught by the tights before he can tag, but with a big clothesline of his own he gets the corner and Tyler Breeze is finally in! He throws the Italian all around, eventually getting a half crab locked in. Barthel breaks that up, but Dango takes him out. Breezango get Aichner hung up in the corner, but after a Supermodel Kick, Barthel breaks up Breeze’s cover. Back and forth leads to a nifty spot where Barthel shoves Prince Pretty off the top into Aichner’s arms, he catches him for a suplex. Fandango barely breaks up the cover. Things break down and Imperium goes for the same tandem move on the outside, but Dango saves his partner. Back in, he goes for the leg drop off the top but Aichner evades. Barthel kicks him in the jaw and a suplex follow-up gets a close nearfall. Fandango’s in trouble, but manages to get a tornado DDT. Both men tag, and a blind tag by Barthel sets Breeze up for the European bomb, but Dango shoves Aichner into his partner. Prince Pretty stacks him up, and the good guys win! Breezango def. Imperium via pinfall to retain their NXT Tag Team championship Jessi Kamea & Xia Li vs. Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter The announce team plays this up as a chance to possibly earn a WWE Women’s Tag Team title shot. Catanzaro & Carter get the first pinfall when Kacy slides and grabs Li’s foot while Kayden slings her to the mat. Xia gets free with strikes, but tandem offense continues from C & C. A big clothesline from the tall Kamea allows that team to take control with Catanzaro in peril. Kacy evades a splash in the corner, and both teams tag. Carter & Li have a striking exchange that Kayden wins with a drop kick. Superkicks for both her opponents, then tag to Catanzaro. Pump kick from Kacy while Kayden had Xia in a crucifix, then Catanzaro pops over for a bridging pin. Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter def. Jessi Kamea & Xia Li via pinfall The winners offer a fist bump in the aftermath, but Xia doesn’t want anything to do with it. We see Drake finally find Killain, who doesn’t know about the match, and tells Maverick he’s on his own. After a break, Tegan Nox cuts a promo about how Candice has changed. The LeRae she knew definitely wouldn’t sit around and listen to her husband whine about a $200 TV that she broke, just so he can watch himself lose on it. It boils down to Candice wants a lackey, while Tegan just wanted her friend back. But that’s okay, next week she’s gonna win the battle royal, and she can’t wait to see the look on Johnny’s face when it happens. She also warns Io that this time, she won’t come up short. Undisputed ERA (Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish) vs. Drake Maverick & Killian Dain No Dain, and Maverick heads in for what looks like a handicap match. Drake does his never-say-die thing, but things go about as well as you’d expect. We occasionally see shots of guys watching in the back, and Killian is enjoying seeing his “partner” get his butt kicked. After a break, Fish is working over Drake when we see General Manager William Regal step to Dain. The big Irishman argues that he didn’t sign up for the match, but gets up and heads to the ring just as Maverick is thrown to the floor. He picks up Drake and tells him to get in the ring and lose like a man. TUE mock him and tell him to keep steppin’. He turns around and they throw Maverick at him. He sidesteps and heads into the ring and wipes out Roddy. Fish comes in with a chair and that’s the DQ... Drake Maverick & Killian Dain def. Undisputed ERA by disqualification Maverick grabs the chair from Fish, allowing Dain to clean house. Drake is fired up and slaps Killian in the chest, excited they’re a tag team. He gets punched in the face for it. Jake Atlas is seen leaving as faceless interviewer guy catches up to him and asks what he was thinking setting up the match against Tommaso Ciampa for next week. Before he can get too far into his answer, Ciampa attacks. Steve Corino, some other agents and Kyle O’Reilly of all people break it up. Tommaso tells Jake he’ll see him next week, and KOR he’ll deal with him soon, too. After a break, it’s MAJOR announcement time! Regal reveals Balor’s next challenger will be determined in a Gauntlet Eliminator match. Five men will compete. Two start, with others entering a four minute intervals. You have to be pinned or submitted to be eliminated. The winner gets The Prinxe at TakeOver on Oct. 4. Damian Priest vs. Timothy Thatcher Grappling to start, and Priest holds his own, but ends up underneath. He finally gets on offense when he wins a power contest as they exchange shoulder block. The champ is nursing his arm, but it doesn’t stop him from trying for a powerbomb on the floor. Thatcher shoves him into the ring steps, then suplexes him on the floor as we got PiP. Priest fights his way back into it on the small screen, and they’re a-clubbering each other when we get back to full screen. A slap by Thatcher fires up the champ, and Priest comes back with a flurry and a big clothesline that turns the challenger inside out. Spinning back elbow in the corner is followed by doing the deal with a Falcon Arrow, but Thatch kicks out at two. Thatcher tries for an armbar but catches two kicks to the dome for his trouble. Priest tries for a springboard enziguri but Thatcher sidesteps and tries for the armbar again. Another striking exchange, again won by the champ... but Thatcher was playing possum. He catches a kick and goes for a legbar. He finally gets it and turns him over, but the Archer of Infamy makes the ropes. It’s not long before he’s stuck in the Fujiwara armbar, but Priest gets a toe on the ropes. He goes for South of Heaven, but his arm gives out. He connects with a flatliner, then hits his chokeslam a second later, but can only get two. Spinning heel kick off the top, Reckoning, and that’s all she wrote. Damian Priest def. 2020.09.16 16:45 MinteeyCinema at its lowest point
When The Chipmunks disguise squirrels as themselves with toys of them and the box says Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel I said to myself, "This is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life." I stepped outside of the auditorium and sat outside for a good 5 minutes rethinking my entire life. I kept asking myself, "Why am I doing this to myself? Why is Jason Lee in this? Is he a masochist? Why couldn't he do another season of My Name is Earl? That was a pretty good show. How could he stoop this low? Why did he agree to do this movie? Why am I watching this movie?" Life can be cruel, this is life at its cruelest. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip has the "beloved" Chipmunks return to the big screen after 4 YEARS since the abomination called Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. This time Alvin, Simon and Theodore decide for the 4th time that Dave wants to get rid of them even though they've been living with him for 11 years and he hasn't decided to jump off a bridge to get the chalk-screeching sounds of their voices out of his head. I bet Dave wakes up in the middle of the night with sounds of The Chipmunks singing terrible covers of songs that were popular in 2006 and realizes that he's made a terrible mistake and contemplates taking them to a taxidermist to keep his sanity. Anyways, they think he's going to propose to his girlfriend, that's so stupid that she keeps forgetting that she has a stethoscope hanging around her neck in every scene, and go across the country to stop the proposal. Every time I try to explain the plot to someone I end up finding the nearest pillow and screaming my sorrows away into that said pillow. That's how poorly thought out and written this film is. As you can tell from the first 2 paragraphs I hate this movies guts. It does so many things wrong that it baffles me that when the MPAA saw this to give it a rating they didn't just chuck it out the window with The Day The Clown Cried. The comedy is the equivalent to Vine as in it comes out of nowhere. So because of that you laugh cause it was… random. Who cares of making good jokes when the crying 3 year old can get a good chuckle to a fart joke. There are jokes so random that I'm baffled that they got passed the final cut. Like when Theodore randomly starts singing Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back so they can get a butt joke in there. Let's not the children think and make the adults cringe as they see this so-called comedy happen right in front of them. It seems that after 3 movies David Cross had better things to do (i.e. Bob and Dave) and passed on this movie. So who could replace the Arrested Development star? Well why not another Arrested Development star, Tony Hale. I feel so bad for his character because he's literally just doing his job and trying to capture fugitive Chipmunks (Did I just type Fugitive Chipmunks?). But not even his character is redeemable. Random celebrity appearances include LMFAO (Remember him? No? I don't blame you.), Bella Thorne, that one girl from Austin and Ally, and famous YouTube star Flula. Do they have any reason to be in this? Of course not! It's all about the money! But this movie won't be making its money bank because some genius at FOX said, "Let's release this the same day as Star Wars The Force Awakens! We'll make so much money off this!" From the day I am writing this Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip has grossed $14 million opening day. "That sounds like a lot!" you say. Well let's compare it to the other Chipmunk films. The first Chipmunk film made $44 million on its opening day. The Squeakquel made $48 million on its opening day and Chipwrecked made $23 million on it's opening day. So what happened? I'll tell you. NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE CHIPMUNKS ANYMORE! When you go on hiatus for 4 years and suddenly announce your 4th film in the middle of 2015 you're asking for your film to flop. I have nothing else to say about this movie. The Road Chip is the worst film I've ever experienced in my life. Nothing will compare (hopefully!). It's a shame that people can get away with making trash like this. Go see anything else that doesn't involve anthropomorphic chipmunks.
2020.09.16 16:45 IndieheadsAOTYAlbum of the Year 2014 #16: Spoon - They Want My Soul
Hello everyone and welcome back once again to Album of the Year 2014, the daily write-up series for the month of September where we bring you a new write-up each day from a different indieheads user talking about their favorite album of 2014. Up today, the former head of the Canadian Indie Rock Canon, rccrisp, is up swinging today talking about Spoon's 2014 album, They Want My Soul. August 5, 2014 - Loma Vista Listen: Spotify Bandcamp Apple Music Background Formed in the Mid 90’s and coming into their own in the back half of the decade’s post Grunge landscape, Spoon, formed in Austin, Texas with SingeGuitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno meeting as part of the band The Alien Beats. The band name was chosen in homage to the German Krautrock band Can whose song “Spoon” was the theme song to American release of German film Jagged Edge. After singing with Matador Records, they released their debut LP Telephono, an album that had mixed reviews but showed signs of promise, allowing the band to sign a major label record deal. After singing with Elektra, Spoon recorded A Series of Sneaks, a better received sophomore effort that had poor sales causing the band to be dropped by their label. After signing with Merge Records, Spoon would find its niche in the growing Indie Rock landscape of the 2000’s. Coincidentally the band would begin a string of stellar albums that today are considered modern classics. From the dark and experimental Girls Can Tell to the manic Kill the Moonlight to the pop sensibilities of Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Spoon developed a reputation of being one of the most consistent bands in music, able to shift slide and adjust their sound with ease while not alienating their fans. After the (initially) lukewarm received Transference, Spoon would go on to release They Want My Soul after a four year break. Review In the world of rock music it’s hard to age gracefully. Look no further than the kids that made up the Meet Me In The Bathroom set. The only people sitting there waiting wistfully for the next Strokes album are a bunch of hipster boomers unwilling to let the past die. Sure enough the slow switch of indie rock from college slackers in too big sweaters to “too cool” young adults who took indie rock and turned it into a life style (Whole Foods, Urban Outfitters, PBR, American Spirits) should’ve known that as their music became co-opted by branding and identity, the bands that mode up that culture wouldn’t last past the zeitgeist explosion. Bands like the aforementioned Strokes, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand are five to six albums in and are only bringing back diminishing returns. Even the pillars of the genre, your TV On The Radios, Arcade Fires and, gasp, Animal Collective aren’t exactly releasing their best albums as they approach and ultimately pass middle age. Maybe it’s a reflection of the people who consumed this music in the first place (see: me, who is also aging horribly) but these bands were here for the sprint and, seemingly, not the marathon. Because in order to run a marathon you need steadiness, consistency. In Indie Rock you need to be Spoon. Spoon’s biggest insult is that “they’re the most consistent band in Indie Rock.” It feels like a hollow knock against them and implies a lot of things that are simply untrue. For one it implies the band is “boring” which is patently false. You can’t tell me from their slick, only major label release A Series of Sneaks to the dark and brooding Girls Can Tell to the frantic Kill The Moonlight and trying to find the pop hooks in Gimmie Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga that there isn’t a band that’s operating on another level, able to shift and shimmy their sound and yet retain an indescribable “Spoon-ness” that seeps through the songs. Even at their worst Spoon are less “egregiously bad” and more “off the centre of greatness.” Sure I haven’t listened to their debut Telephono in over a few decades but even when I did, I could hear the moments of greatness in its sludgy production. The criminally underrated Transference might dive a little too deep into its dark lo fi aesthetic but it contains some of Spoon’s best singular songs and is an absolute killer live. And while Hot Thoughts misses the mark it’s still refreshing to see a band try throwing a curve ball nine albums into their discography. The other ridiculous notion about calling Spoon a “consistent band” is the insinuation the band hasn't released a stone cold classic. Kill The Moonlight and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga definitely refute that claim, Girls Can Tell and Gimmie Fiction have a strong case but in my opinion They Want My Soul can stand up to any of Spoon's classic albums. Spoon began the sessions for recording They Want My Soul in 2013 after a lengthy hiatus which saw the band members splinter off to do their own projects. Frontman Britt Daniel said that after touring for Transference that the band felt “a little burned out” and for himself he needed “something that was going to reinvigorate me, to excite me abut working on new stuff again.” Daniel ended up forming The Divine Fits with Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade, Jim Eno ended up doing production work for other bands, Rob Pope returned to his band The Get Up Kids and Eric Harvey recorded a solo album. Sessions for They Want My Soul were broken up into two parts, with much of the early song writing involving Spoon going into sessions with no songs in mind, being assisted by Joe Chiarelli. Dan Friedman however, (notable for producing albums such as Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robot, Era Extraña and most of MGMT’s discography) is said to have the most impact on the album. As per Daniel, Friedman’s producing style “maxes everything out. We've never worked with somebody like that before - somebody with such a strong sense of their own style." Surely enough when most artists entering their 40’s are releasing their most down-to-earth, quiet albums, Spoon, whose sound while “guitar rock” never really leaned into the “rock” aspect, release their most powerful and bombastic album. On album opener “Rent I Pay” Eno lets his musical voice be heard, the punctuating snappy snares open and continue to pierce through the track as Daniel succinctly describes every day drudgery over a song that sounds like 60’s Classic Rock fused with the punk minimalism of Wire. The urgent and tense “Rainy Taxi” feels like re-contextualization of those frantic and nervous piano-centric tracks from Kill The Moonlight but mixed with a healthy dose of Chicago with its heart beat bass lines over squealing guitars. Spoon’s strength has always been it’s been hard to pin point where their sound comes from, making their albums feel wholly their own even though elements of their influences pop and peak in. The ethereal “Inside Out” feels like a continuation of much of what they explored on Transference but cleaned up while the synth tinged album ender “New York Kiss” is a crowd pleaser that hints at the upcoming more tech leaning Hot Thoughts. However Spoon feel at home on this album when they get back to their “indie rock roots.” Songs that feel like proper continuations of the sounds heard on Ga Ga Ga Ga and Gimmie Fiction like “Let Me Be Mine” which takes the energy of “The Underdog” but tempers it with darker moments that feel Transference-era as Daniel fights between the ideas of freedom and commitment. On title track “They Want My Soul” Daniel uses faith and astrological imagery (as well as a shout out to Jonathon Fisk, the name of Britt Daniel’s school age bully who had a song dedicated to him on Kill The Moonlight) as a metaphor for his public persona allowing people to take pieces of his life away from him. “Do You” feels like it has all the elements of the greatest Spoon songs (an absolutely catchy chorus, piano, hooks and Daniel’s intense vocal delivery) while the lyrics explores the traps and charms of memory and nostalgia. Daniel’s explores love, desires, intentions and self sabotage as he describes himself as a drunken mess in the first verse (“I was half out of the bag”), but follows up on the nature of imperfect love, one night stands (“Flipping back pages, unbuckling belts”) while accepting this is the nature of modern love (“Oh love, that’s the way love comes"), Few artists ever get to this point, in their 40’s and releasing one of the best albums of their discography. But there’s still a hungriness that it palpable when listening to They Want My Soul. Time didn’t bog down Spoon, their relative success not becoming a hindrance on writing thought provoking music but instead taking everything they had worked on in the past and bringing it in the present. While their contemporaries were slowly releasing weaker albums Spoon can at least own the fact they had one last gasp, their familiar sound fitted for the modern Indie Rock landscape, being both familiar and expansive and evolving of their albums till that point. This is a thank you to my most recent batch of exchanges for my most recent offer Loot 808pgh - I also hope I can visit Hawaii one day, so many people I know have gone and it looks amazing. Until then I'll be in hot af Texas. RareExcitement - What a cool oldschool illustration of Alcatraz! That's another place I'd like to visit [if it's still open to the public in the after times, I guess?] because it just seems so desolate and spooky. razcraz - Woah! I don't think I've seen this Han/Chewie stamp before, neat. Also, poor Jim the Moose lol blueinfinityfinder - I love the crystal ball/esoteric imagery on this card, is it a custom stamp you made? I'm still ready for cooler weather any day now, but that little dip we had last week was a nice little taste of what i'm looking for. Austin is... Austin lol. I've been remote since the pandemic started and have a lot of reasons that Covid would find me especially appetizing so I haven't been doing much out-and-about-ing. And yeah you were super close to where I am now! In the Before Times [lol] my bus route to work went right through your neck of the woods. I've been here since 2007 but even I've seen just how drastic the changes have been, it's crazy. Also LOVE those stickers, especially the 'Cat Flag' one, I had a good laugh. I had to immediately send a picture of it to one of my punk friends and she's in love. PS - I got that skull Washi at Michaels last year. Every year around now they get in some cute washi tapes. jamiesayss - Huh, I knew that with Disney buying the world and all there would be a lot of crossovers, but never thought I'd see a Star Wars x NBC imagery. Thinking of Darth Vader's singing voice for Jack's songs did give me some serious amusement though lol Zedhead90 - YES! I'm so stoked you had an Egg Monsters card! It's definitely not a favorite and super weird/extra hokey so it doesn't get a lot of love compared to so many of the other Goosebumps stories. Tacked that right up on my wall for some sweet sweet nostalgia. And Werewolf of Fever Swamp was a good one too. I DID have a problem with the outgoing mailbox I use being damaged/had to be fixed so a lot of the mail was stuck inside for a almost a week when I sent my exchange card to you. So if you haven't received it it should be there any day now. [if not let me know and I'd be glad to send another horror card]

A couple of weeks ago, I read ‘Did I Scare You? How MJ altered the sensations of racism’. It’s a retrospective review of "GHOSTS" in which Michael's response to his critics is analysed. It’s a great read and very well informed, though I some of the comments it made I wasn’t so sure of. The review focused on Michael’s changing face, how he used it for art and it’s connections between Michael and racism. I don’t disagree with the article but I wanted to articulate for myself what I feel about the movie and put it out there. GHOSTS is my favourite short film. Combined with HIStory: Past, Present & Future Book I, they are a set of artistic works which has been the most autobiographical of Michael's work. I wanted to share everything I know about it with links to behind the scenes, articles, music and information in one place. I wrote this to post on MichaelJackson, I’m not a professional writer or music critic, I’m just a fan so forgive me if my style is a bit messy. To my knowledge, Ghosts isn’t available on any streaming network and there’s no high-quality versions of Ghosts available online but this is the best I can find on YouTube, The sound is off and the picture is stretched from 4:3 to 16:9. Halloween is coming up soon and naturally we think about Thriller, Ghosts and few other tracks at this time of year. I can only hope the estate will at some point scan it to 4K and release it properly. I can’t just write about Ghosts, “Is It Scary” and “2 Bad” are part of its DNA. Hell, the whole HIStory album should be included given what “Ghosts” is about, even “Morphine” could be included but this post is a biggie, so I won’t. The story of the feature film: “Michael Jackson’s Ghosts” is a far cry from the title of the movie and the track it lends its name from.

Is It Scary origins / Addams Family Values In 1992 Paramount Pictures asked Michael to participate in the movie “Addams Family Values” they (and he) wanted a short film in the style of “Thriller” or “Smooth Criminal” as an insert (or independent short film) to help promote the Addams Family Values. In 1992, Michael asked horror writer Stephen King to collaborate with him and Mick Garris (then director) to write a screenplay for the short film (with no title at this stage). The two wrote an outline of what eventually became GHOSTS and set on a title of “Is It Scary”. This was to indirectly match the Addams Family Values movie plot while also being autobiographical of Michael’s life. This is around the middle of the Dangerous tour between Tokyo in late 1992 and Bangkok in August 1993. The film was to depict local villagers attempting to exorcise a perceived villain or threat to the community, a theme which loosely runs through the Addams Family Values and prophesied what was to come in Michael’s personal life, after initial shooting began. More Info from AFI Catalog. There’s a scene in Addams Family Values where Joel screams at a poster of Michael on the wall, another example of Michael being the punchline in jokes across the film industry and it’s a shame because they were using him originally to help promote the movie. More Info. Filming for “Is It Scary” began in the first half of 1993 at the CBS/MTV studios in LA, the music scenes had not yet been filmed (The song, “Is It Scary” hadn’t been written yet) and Michael had to resume the Dangerous Tour. There are conflicting reports as to whether Michael was falsely accused during the shoot for “Is It Scary” or shortly afterwards when hr resumed the Dangerous tour, which he eventually cancelled. The most obvious change between the versions are the Mayor. Ken Jenkins (Dr Bob Kelso from Scrubs). Michael Jackson Is It Scary 1993 Unreleased Short Film (Ghosts Early Concept)
There are a few versions of this cut online, all low quality unfortunately, but for those who have never seen it, it’s interesting to see the original concept.
Another version of the video, uploaded by cast member Shana Mangatal. In both these versions, toward the end of the video Wednesday Addams uses the electric chair to ‘play’ with her brothers Pugsley and Pubert Addams. The sound of the electricity in this short scene is similar to the beginning of “Morphine” which was recorded later. I wonder if the two are connected?
(From the YT description): I filmed Michael Jackson's "Ghosts" with Michael in April 1996. In honour of the 21st Anniversary of filming, I put together this tribute which includes commentary from me about the making of the original 1993 version, "Is This Scary". "GHOSTS" was Michael's baby and he wanted it to be seen by everyone. He was very proud of it.
(Paraphrased from the linked YT video): In August 1993, I (Shana Mangatal, cast member in both “Is It Scary” and “GHOSTS”) was in the middle of filming. Just before we filmed this scene, Michael learned of allegations against him. Michael was sad, devastated and ANGRY. In a strange twist of fate, in this scene, I and a few of the other actors had to stand on the other side of the camera, and yell names at him like "weirdo" and "freak" and say, "you're scaring our children". Michael could no longer hold his emotions in and he let all of his anger out in this scene. These lines were not in the script. This is one of the last scenes he filmed before he became so sick and distraught that he couldn't continue.
Life Imitates Art In response to tabloid and press speculation about Michael’s absence from the media and America, Michael Jackson’s lawyer, Bertram Fields released a statement included in this New York Times article in November 1993 stating that Michael was under treatment for addiction to painkillers and "was barely able to function adequately on an intellectual level" but added that this was just temporary. Mr. Fields laid the blame for Michael’s addiction, in part, to "the rage, humiliation and embarrassment" over [the Jordy Chandler case]. He said it would be foolish to bring Mr. Jackson back to the United States now to help prepare a defines against the civil suit, or to be questioned by the child's lawyer, given Mr. Jackson's condition. This reddit thread from 8 months ago together with the Michael Jackson Allegations website and the Leaving Neverland Q&A episode of the MJCast go into the detail of the allegations. Clearly, we can see that Michael has been hit hard. Midway through filming “Is It Scary” and performing the Dangerous concerts he is vilified by people who already have bias against him in a bizarre “life Imitates art” freak coincidence. It was during this time that the contract between Paramount and Michael was cancelled. Michael also cancelled the remaining dates of his Dangerous tour. News reports at the time were focused on his presumed guilt, the failure to his fans and the money he lost. I have only ever seen one article written at the time in support of Michael, written for GQ magazine in October 1994 8 months before HIStory was released. A copy is available here. Michael was understandably at an all-time low, I’ve never read anywhere that he got depressed but alas, he medicated himself using painkillers. I don’t blame him, do you? Morphine A Quick note about “Morphine”: It was written and produced exclusively by MJ. Michael was more hands on for this track and played percussion, drums and guitar along with all lead and backing vocals. This is Michael Jackson without other producers or arrangers influencing the track. “Morphine” was going to be the lead single from Blood on The Dance Floor but Sony decided on the title track from the album instead. (Later for Invincible, Sony disallowed Michael’s choice of lead single favouring You Rock My World instead of Unbreakable). It’s tragic that a lot of people have not even heard of “Morphine”, not only is it another great MJ Vs Slash rock track, it’s Michael at his most vulnerable, “Morphine” is a cry for help which ultimately went unnoticed and unanswered. Repurposing “Is It Scary” for Ghosts With the project for “Is It Scary” now scrapped; Michael was free to continue his work. Deciding to rework a cancelled compilation entitled Decade 1980-1990 (it was scrapped in favour of Dangerous) and incorporating new songs, the resulting album became HIStory: Past, Present & Future Book I. (I could write pages about the HIStory album, it’s one of the most iconic concept albums ever created, a musical autobiography and a work of genius by a genius)! To focus again on “Ghosts”, we need to skip forward to late 1995 after the HIStory album was recorded was released. Michael took control over the “Is It Scary” project and decided to use “2 Bad” since the lyrics are coherent with the movies theme. It’s conceivable that Michael had this video in mind when he was writing “2 Bad” in 1994. Michael was producing this short film to promote the HIStory album, before embarking on the HIStory world tour. It’s possible the movie may have been temporarily renamed to “2 Bad” given that’s the core song of the production and the ID tags for the cast and clapper boards during production feature “2 Bad” instead of “Is It Scary” or “Ghosts”. Sony asked Michael during the production of Ghosts (Movie) for a new album. That ultimately became Blood On The Dance Floor, the best selling remix album of all time. Working with Stan Winston in early 1996, the original script changed, and Michael would play several incarnations of himself ‘demonised’, (Hello Thriller 1996)! as well as the antagonist, who happens to be the modelled on the same demographic as Tom Sneddon. This is just as coincidental as the name “Dom Stanton” is to Tom Sneddon ;) Ghosts Orchestral Score The dance routines were choreographed by Michael and LaVelle Smith and Timothy Earl Soloman to the original score of Ghosts by Nicolas Pike mixed with “2 Bad”. (Nicholas Pike at Discogs). MJVibe Interviewed Nicolas Pike in 1995 about the orchestra for Ghosts in 2015. Available here.
2 Bad The version of “2 Bad” which features on GHOSTS is reworked, funkier, groovier and it’s a hard hitting, aggressive, ‘fluff the dust off your shoulder’ dance routine is just as livid as it’s angry lyrics. “2 Bad’s” lyrics deal with themes of alienation and judgement. the song confronts his accusers, his gritty voice raises its volume and declares “You’re disgustin’ me” This is in direct response to people who have harmed him, people who have extorted money from him. Michael is angry, probably more angry than he was in “Scream” but that anger beautifully expresses confidence in his ability to recover from people who have conspired against him in the past. A few days ago, u/Starfire asked “What aspect of MJ's life are you abnormally obsessed with?” and I’d have to say how autobiographical he is in his music and his attitude, full of self-confidence with it, “2 Bad” for instance proclaims “too bad, you tried I won’t back down”. The Run-DMC sample at the beginning is interesting and extremely important. Between the Bad and Dangerous albums, Michael invited Run-DMC to collaborate with him for a track called “Crack Kills”, they rudely declined. They even use semiotics in their music video for King of Rock to denounce Michael, symbolically stamping on Michael’s sequined glove from Billie Jean. They didn’t create this anti-Michael movement but they were following what was unfortunately becoming the mainstream opinion about Michael at the time, criticizing him for his looks and eccentricities instead of enjoying the work he did. It was the end of making fun out of Michael but it was the start of him becoming demonised by the press and ridiculed by the the public. Something which didn’t end until he announced his final curtain call, “This Is It”. (Run-DMC later regret never working with him). So what did Michael do? Use the first lines of lyrics from King of Rock as the first lines in “2 Bad” an awesome ‘Fuck You song’ in its own right but in Ghosts, Michael plays himself and parodies of these demons he is falsely accused of. Of all the lyrics within “2 Bad”, of all the lyrics in the HIStory album, of all the lyrics he has ever performed... “I’m Standing Though You’re Kicking Me” ...is one of the most profoundly autobiographical, ironic and iconic statements across his music. “2 Bad” was written by Michael, Dallas Austin, Bruce Swedien, René Moore, and Shaquille O’Neal (he wrote the Rap, Michael and Shaq knew each other casually). It was produced by Michael, Bruce Swedien, René Moore, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at The Hit Factory in New York 1994. It was the third time Michael has collaborated with basketball stars (Michael Jordan on Jam and Magic Johnson on Remember The Time) proving once again that “♫ It Ain’t Too Ah-Much For Me To Jam!”. After a gruelling dance routine, set to music which was modified on set so Michael could ‘feel it’ the song gives way to “Is It Scary”. (Similar music for this dance break is linked below). Is It Scary “Is It Scary” was written and recorded by Michael, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis between 1993/4 and recorded at Flyte Tyme Studios, Minnesota and Larrabee Studios, LA. Notably after the story for what became the Ghosts film. The lyrics for “Is It Scary” are based in part on the screenplay for Ghosts, Michael’s autobiographical story, an unwelcome eccentric man. The movie and song are symbiotic, considering the movie was conceptualised before the false allegations emerged and the song was finished afterwards, Michael sings “I'm gonna be exactly what you want to see, It's you who's haunting me” and “And if you want to see eccentricities, I'll be grotesque before your eyes. Let them all materialize! Is that scary for you”? Michael is referencing himself as the victim, he is essentially saying “you will see what you want to see, you’ve already made up your mind”. It’s not the first time Michael has sung about himself as the victim. “They Don’t Care About Us” features the lines “Jew me, sue me, everybody do me. Kick me, kike me, don’t you black or white me” On June 15, 1995, a day before the release of HIStory, The New York Times reported that "They Don't Care About Us" contained racist and anti-Semitic content. Michael responded directly stating:
"The idea that these lyrics could be deemed objectionable is extremely hurtful to me, and misleading. The song in fact is about the pain of prejudice and hate and is a way to draw attention to social and political problems. I am the voice of the accused and the attacked. I am the voice of everyone. I am the skinhead, I am the Jew, I am the black man, I am the white man. I am not the one who was attacking. It is about the injustices to young people and how the system can wrongfully accuse them. I am angry and outraged that I could be so misinterpreted." — Michael Jackson 1995.
Michael has sung about his oppressors and the press before, “Leave Me Alone” is cry for privacy, “Why You Wanna Trip On Me” questions why him and not society, “Scream” is about… (read this instead) and “Tabloid Junkie” (well, that one condemns us all doesn’t it)? “Is It Scary” turns the tables, an anthem just as powerful as Earth Song or Man In The Mirror. Michael Jackson, the philanthropist and humanitarian the boy who the world watch grow up and young fans are STILL finding excellence in his work two decades after his final album. A man who has given up time and money to help children all over the world, a man now signing for his own justice, a man literally screaming at the top of his voice “I'm tired of being abused, you know you're scaring me too, I see the evil is you!” And what is there to fear? Absolutely nothing. In the movie, after this track we’re treated to some funky instrumentals, taken from “2 Bad” that would make even Prince gasp and yet another dance breakdown. Michael isn’t present during this one but he doesn’t need to be. It is SIGNATURE Michael Jackson. At the end of this scene, Michael as the ghoul, inhabits the body of the Mayor and uses him, his image and humiliates him In front of the towns people which is exactly what has happened to Michael. The entire theme of this movie is about Michael being persecuted, not only by Tom Sneddon but the wider public at large. The most humiliating point for Michael by this time was the strip search by LAPD two years earlier in December 1993. Michael released a public statement two days after stating that “it was the most humiliating ordeal of my life”. Michael, as an extremely artistic but also playful in nature, teases his accuser by trolling him in a dance short, then shining a mirror right back at him asking “Who’s the freak now”? Michael Jackson, a KING, takes a bow. In the last few minutes of the movie, Michael asks the crowd if he should he stay or not? He’s won them over already, they can see his point, but the mayor is insistent, the freak doesn’t belong here. Michael gives him what he wants, a self-destructive blow to the floor, turning to dust. There’s a look of shock and horror on the town’s folk, maybe even regret that they misjudged him. Guilt perhaps that they were the ones to instigate what appears to be a suicide right in front of them. In the original version from 1993, this scene has the kids attempt to put him back together again, in Ghosts, his (ashes?) are blown away. Saddened, the crowd start to leave, and the movie takes a quick twist from sadness to humour. Michael is well documented to be a practical joker and he instilled his personality yet again as Michael appears larger than life in the doorway of the exit. The mayor scared out of his wits runs for the window and jumps out, the music and shape of the break in the glass has a humorous theme. Michael asked at the start this confrontation, whoever gets scared first, must leave. Well my friends, Michael had the last laugh. As the credits roll, we’re treated to around 5 minutes of behind the scenes footage featuring the makeup changes and CGI featured in the film. The title track begins and it’s a slightly different version from the remastered version for Blood on The Dance Floor. Ghosts (song) Michael and Teddy Riley wrote “Family Thing” together in 1993 for the Addams Family / Is It Scary movies but they stopped production when the “Is It Scary” movie was shelved. No longer tied to the movie, a new song was created. “Ghosts” was written by Michael and Teddy at the Hit Factory, NY & Record Plant Studios and Ocean Way Recording between 1994-1997, it was also intended for inclusion on the HIStory album (It was replaced with “2 Bad” instead). There’s a 1996 version of Ghosts with constant bass running through the track while a remaster doesn’t include the extra bassline. (Links below). Some of the information I’ve read about Ghosts suggests that the chorus is a logical continuation to “Who Is It” but I can’t see that myself, can you? Ghosts (Production Including Making Of) Stan Winson (director) was recommended to Michael by Mick Garris, (the original director). Michael called Stan personally to ask if he might consider directing the film and Stan agreed with only one condition: that Michael would play all the lead roles. “I wanted Michael to play the haunted house guy," said Winston, "but also the mayor of the town, and an evil demon who comes in at one point. Michael wanted badly to be accepted as an actor, as something more than the King of Pop. But it was so difficult for people to get past Michael’s persona, I thought that the only way he would be accepted as a real actor was if he played all these parts, disguised in makeup, so that no one would know it was him until the end. And he was very agreeable to that idea.” GHOSTS Behind The Scenes at Stan Winston School. Artist Paul Mejias was the sculptor for the model work on Michael’s various costumes.
Concept Art for Michael pulling ‘his’ skin and smashing ‘his’ skull. From makeup artist Miles Tevas. (Apart from Michael’s music and dancing, the scenes where he’s disfiguring himself in Ghosts have got to be the best across this short film catalogue). VH1 released a 20-minute documentary The Making of Michael Jackson’s Ghosts right before Halloween in October 2002. It features the making of, with behind the scenes material and the detail of some of the cinematic illusions behind the production as well as interviews with the cast and crew including Michael.

2020.09.10 03:19 Top_Gorilla17The Curse of Dogpatch
[Note; The following post is rather long, and I have a tendency to write with a lot of what some might consider to be pretentious filler. If you want a TL;DR, it boils down to "Dogpatch is cursed, I almost died there a bunch of times", but that's boring, and so are you. For those who enjoy my brand of self-indulgent prose, I have split this into three separate stories, all denoted by the chapter headings. Enjoy! - TG]
Chapter 1 - An Eye For an Eye
Many many eons ago, back when I was but a pup, I had this best friend, Jeremy. I need not describe him, just think of any and every Jeremy that you've ever known- Yup. That's the guy. We were inseparable pretty much all through middle school. I would spend most of my leisure time hanging out and getting into mischief at his house in this neighborhood known to locals as 'The Dogpatch.' Now, Dogpatch wasn't a trailer park, but it might as well have been. The whole thing was private property, so the cops would never come into the area, which made it an excellent location for engaging in villainy. You'd see mostly drug deals, vandalism and other assorted hooliganery, though I was always more into stealing the street signs, myself. Frankly, it's a wonder that my mom would even let me go there as a kid. Dogpatch had this sort of otherworldly mystique to it, though. To enter it was akin to setting foot into a completely different dimension of reality. The laws that governed nature for the rest of the world did not apply here. For one thing, unlike the surrounding neighborhoods, plants did not seem to grow in Dogpatch. No grass, no bushes... There were trees, but they were all dead. It always looked like circa 1930s Missouri, but with a few more cars on cinder blocks, and about 16% more beer cans just lying around on the ground for anyone to take. Legend has it that the land itself had been cursed back in 1987, when this kid known as 'Dirtbike Jimmy', a rat-tailed, gremlin-like rabble-rouser known to charge other kids in the hood to rent shades, had stolen a travelling Gypsy fortune-teller's glass eye as she was passing through. Now I don't know if I believe that- After all, Dirtbike Jimmy wasn't always the most trustworthy fellow. Only about half the lies he ever told turned out to be true, but there did seem to be a certain kind of 'salted earth' quality to Dogpatch that no-one I knew could ever fully explain. Indeed, it seemed in particular that the land had resolved to taste of my blood, as I very nearly met my untimely end here more times than I care to count. In reality, I probably should have kept my distance, but Jeremy's mom was cool, and she let us do stuff other parents wouldn't let their kids get away with, so the risk was worth it. As I recall, the first time I experienced the Curse of Dogpatch was during the summer of 2001. We had dug up a trench in Jeremy's backyard and created an artificial river with the garden hose, and had a whole slew of action figures- or 'guys,' as we called them- set up all over the place, having a giant battle. All the big names were there- G.I. Joe, the Power Rangers, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Stone Cold Steve Austin, those little green army guys... You name it, we had them involved somehow. We weren't content to simply make "PEW PEW" noises and knock them over though, oh no! We were at that point in every boy's life where fire and destruction is like, super friggin' sweet, so we would basically go full Sid from 'Toy Story,' rigging up firecrackers in order to create explosions and such. It was while I was torturing a 'Max Steel' doll by burning it at the stake, however, when the curse struck. I cackled with moronic delight as the flames began to envelop the poor, unfortunate bastard, and I pretended he was screaming in hideous anguish instead of giving me that stupid, dead-eyed stare. My exuberance increased two-fold when his soft, rubber head began to bubble, and because I was particularly evil, I decided that it would be hilarious to poke his festering, molten head with a stick. How foolhardy I was, a this would turn out to have been a pyrrhic victory for me. Indeed, when I poked the doll's eye, the thing popped and melted quite satisfyingly, but in one final act of defiance, a piece of molten rubber flew directly into my right eye. I fell on my ass into the trench, squealing in pain, as Jeremy frantically sprayed me in the face with the hose in order to "help". Jeremy was not a medical professional. Luckily, I was spared blindness, but the whole ordeal left me scarred. Not even figuratively! I have a permanent mark on the sclera from where it hit me to this very day! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 2 - Kicking It
The second time that the curse of Dogpatch struck occurred later on that same summer. Once again, we were in the backyard at Jeremy's house, only we had decided that, being in the middle of our pyro phase, it would be really cool to play 'Kick the Can,' you know, as a goof... But with fire. So we filled the can about halfway with some lighter fluid, through in a kitchen match and- VWOOOOOM!! A towering vortex of flame, which I swear reached outer-space, shot out from the top of the can, before settling back down into a much more manageable burning Folger's receptacle. French Roast, indeed. This is where the real dumb happens though. See, neither Jeremy or I were never into soccer. We never played it, so it was foolish to assume that we would have any sort of accuracy when it came to aiming our kicks. Jeremy, went first, and well... Only. I remember the whole thing as having happened in slow-motion. He took a running start from about ten feet back, and gave the can a mighty punt, but instead of flying straight into the cinder block wall we had set up, he knicked it at the wrong angle, and it began flying towards me. There was an extreme close-up of my eyes, as my pupils dilated and a reflection of the fiery doom could be seen, all set to Mozart's 'Lacrimosa.' Before I could react, the can struck my leg, spilling ignited lighter fluid all over my dungarees. It's funny; in grade school they made dealing with something like this seem so easy. Just stop, drop, and roll. Imagine my chagrin when it did not immediately work. LIARS! And yet, here I was, the one with my pants on fire! Justice is indeed dead, ladies and gentlefucks. That's why I live paycheck to paycheck, meanwhile someone out there is still collecting royalties for the Liberty Mutual jingle... But I digress. My pants were aflame, rolling around on the ground was doing nothing to stop it, and I was beginning to panic. Jeremy ran to get the hose, but that would take too long, so I leapt like a madman over the neighbor's privacy fence and into their above-ground swimming pool, which finally did quench the flames. All-in all, most of the damage was done to my pant-legs, which were charred and missing significant chunks. My leg hairs, had been completely singed off, though I did not suffer any severe burns, fortunately. We were subsequently banned from playing with fire from that day forward, but much like in the 'Final Destination' series, the curse would not be finished until it had finished me. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 3 - Nailed It!
The curse struck again later during the school year. I was at Jeremy's house, along with these two brothers, Jeff and Daniel. Now, Jeff and Daniel were... Strange, even by my standards, and I'm admittedly a pretty weird guy. They were like living Jhonen Vasquez cartoons. Madness was their Modus Operandi. I remember that they had these weirdly religious parents, but the parents didn't seem to impose their faith onto the kids. Additionally, they had a younger sister who, for lack of a better term, had "rapist eyes". Horrific. They also had like 20 of these little finches that they would just let fly around the house. The last I heard of any of them, Jeff had apparently had a SWAT team called on him for somehow getting on top of the Iowa Financial Authority building and pacing around on the roof wearing a Freddy Krueger glove. More on Jeff and Daniel some other time perhaps, but for now, 'Capture the Flag' was the name of the game. Now, while Jeremy's yard did resemble a barren nuclear wasteland, there was a single tree, upon which sat an old treehouse that we'd sometimes hang out and pretend to smoke weed in. As we were playing the game, I knew that there was most assuredly a flag up there, and by gum, I was gonna get that bitch. I began to climb the ladder, which was just one of those big metal ladders roofers use leaned up against the door to the treehouse. As I neared the top, however, the door flung open and I came face to face with Jeff and his big cartoonish grin. "Oh no you DON'T," he chortled maniacally as he kicked the top of the ladder, sending the whole thing backwards. Again, time slowed down. There was nothing I could do but stare ahead as my vision went from seeing Jeff cackle like Salacious Crumb, to the sky. Then there was darkness... A moment later, I regained conciousness, but the wind had been knocked out of me. Jeff and Daniel were both now heckling me from the treehouse window like some kind of looney bin Statler and Waldorf, as Jeremy came running to see if I was okay. "Yeah. Yeah, I think I'm fine," I began to say, when Jeremy's face turned whiter than a fresh pair of skivvies on Christmas morning. He was looking down at my side, so I turned my head downward to look for myself, and there was a giant rusty nail, probably nine or so inches long, sticking up between my side and my armpit through my shirt, literally just a couple of inches from having impaled me. After that, I didn't spend much more time in Dogpatch, as my mom began insisting that we hang out at my house so as to stop nearly killing myself, or at minimum, at least stop ruining my clothes. Sometimes I drive past it, late at night, just to taunt the evil that lurks there, but I dare not enter. So if you find yourself on the north side of Des Moines and you see a neighborhood which inexplicably resembles the setting of Fallout, beware, lest you, too, become a victim of the Curse of Dogpatch.
